There are a range of potential barriers to professional development, some of these being:
• lack of support from staff – some staff are more interested in the wage they receive and not on ensuring that their skills, knowledge and training are current and kept up to date.
• lack of finance – training is often expensive and the company may not have an adequate budget to spend on staff training. This means that staff will not be be able to provide care to the residents that follow legislation.
• Lack of time to attend training courses – the company may have a shortage of staff and be unable to send members of staff to train.
• Management not being willing to send staff on extra training courses that are not mandatory to their role.
