The Truman show and “The Allegory of the Cave” are a great example of what human’s sees is the only truth they know. The Allegory of the Cave, there are puppet shadows that are being cast on the walls. The prisoners believe the shadows are the real things, when in reality they are simply shadows. The Truman Show, the actors represent the shadows. They fool Truman, and he thinks they are real people. They are really just actors in the movie. In both The Truman Show and the Allegory of the Cave, someone escapes from the false reality and makes it into the real world.
The Allegory of the Cave involves a group of prisoners chained since birth in a cave which they can only see the cave wall. Their only visual is the shadows cast against the cave wall in front of them, cast by objects on a raised walkway between them and a fire burning behind them. Only echoes of voices and sounds near them. The prisoners mistake the shadows and echoes for reality, because that is all they know. One of the prisoner escapes and realized the true meaning of life. The cave with the shadows is world of sight. The light of the torches is the sun is knowledge. The cave is underground, so people would have to walk uphill to go to the sun. People down the cave don’t have a lot of knowledge, and it is painful to look for knowledge, but you will gain it walking uphill into the sun. You gain knowledge by making an effort, and you can be able to act rationally.
Similarities to the Allegory of the Cave is The Truman show a man name Truman Burbank lives in a perfect and happy life where everything including the weather is being controlled in a Hollywood dome filled with actors. Truman Burbank has no idea that their hidden cameras in every corner of his world. He has literally been on television from the moment of birth. He was the first child to be adopted by corporation, Truman has had every moment of his existence captured by television cameras. Truman life is manipulated by media where nothing is real but has no idea it’s all fake. His life was well put together having no idea he was being watched every minute of the day and that everything he does was being viewed by millions of people all over the world.
Allegory of the Cave is what humans perceive as reality. Plato argues that humans are like the prisoners in the cave and live in a world of shadows, where they don’t see the reality. Truman is a prisoner in a dome, where he only knew what he was being fed to believe
