Nursing Education Curriculum for Improving Patient Safety
Nursing education is important in equipping nurses with the required knowledge and skills to perform their duties and responsibilities effectively. The major roles of nurses include providing care to patient and ensuring their safety (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). The nursing education plays a major role in ensuring that nurses are competent in providing care to the patients. Patient safety is as important as the treatment process as it ensures the well-being of the patients while at the healthcare facility (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). Patient safety should be incorporated into the nursing curriculum to guarantee improved patient outcomes. Policy makers and all those involved in the development of the education curriculum should be well informed on the necessary elements in the aspect of patient safety in their designing and development of the education curriculum (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). This paper is going to discuss the inclusion of the aspect of patient safety in the nursing education curriculum, which will improve patient outcomes.

Patient safety is important as the increase in the physical injuries, illnesses, and deaths in hospitals have been attributed to poor patient safety (Panesar, 2014). Due to these negative effects related to poor patient safety, all nurses and other health care professionals are under pressure to provide safe care to the patients seeking out healthcare services from healthcare facilities (Panesar, 2014). The safety of patients is a major concern in every healthcare institution. Since all healthcare professionals are likely to commit medical errors in their delivery of healthcare services, it is important to implement and incorporate strategies, which will reduce the probability rate of committing medical errors. Incorporating patient safety in the nursing curriculum is one of the strategies in addressing this issue (Panesar, 2014).
Since there are no external policies or agencies to ensure the safety of patients in a healthcare facility, this objective is largely depended on the nurses who can only be adequately trained while in colleges and universities (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). Nurses play an important role in the treatment process of patients and are better placed to ensure the safety of the patients. Exposure to risks negatively affects the healthcare goals of a particular healthcare organization. This may lead to poor outcomes or increased health issues. Due to this, it is important for nurses to ensure the safety of patients while in the healthcare facilities (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016).
The negative consequences associated with risks in healthcare facilities have decreased the public trust on healthcare facilities. This has negatively affected the healthcare stakeholders and increased the burden of all these stakeholders in winning back public trust (Panesar, 2014). Healthcare service delivery is one of the major responsibilities of the government and lack of trust on government institutions is an indication of failure to provide the required services effectively. Patient safety has a direct impact on the quality of healthcare services (Panesar, 2014). For improvement of healthcare services, students should be adequately prepared as they enter the nursing profession to enable a continuous contribution in the improvement of healthcare service delivery (Panesar, 2014).

The nurses can address a majority of the safety issues affecting patients. If the nurses do not have the proper knowledge on patient safety, they cannot adequately play this role (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). Due to the decreasing resources of ensuring patient safety in health organizations, the available resources should be used sufficiently which includes training the nurses on patient safety to ensure that this goal is achieved (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016). Lack of adequate patient safety has also resulted to a poor healthcare system. Since healthcare systems are developed to ensure the well-being of patients, this cannot be achieved if patient safety is not integrated as part of the process (Vincent & Amalberti, 2016).
What Are Your Proposed Strategies To Resolve These Issues?
Lack of adequate patient safety is directly connected to incompetent nurses (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015). Incompetence associated with the nursing workforce is connected to the educational and training facilities, which are also pressured to review and improve their education curriculum. This will provide qualified and competent nurses, which will improve the patient outcomes (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015). For this to be achieved, the stakeholders involved in developing the education curriculum should be qualified and experienced to enable an effective curriculum which will be considerate of the different aspects in patient safety (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015). The educators and trainers should also be adequately skilled to enable efficient transfer of knowledge to the nursing students. Healthcare facilities should implement training strategies, which will provide continuous learning, which will lead to improved healthcare services and patient safety (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015).
Currently, there are no courses addressing patient safety by healthcare professionals in health care facilities. This has led to inadequately trained nurses in their role of ensuring that the patients are efficiently taken care of while receiving healthcare services (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015). Although more emphasis has been placed on other safety practices, there has not been positive results in adequately addressing the patient safety issue. Due to this, the nurses who constitute a large percentage of the healthcare workforce should be involved in the process to enable an improved level of patient safety (Goldenberg & Iwasiw, 2015). This can be achieved by improving the nurses’ knowledge, which can be better managed during their training. Integrating the phenomenon of patient safety in the education curriculum is a preventive strategy, which will better address the issue of patient safety than waiting for medical errors to happen in order to implement preventive strategies (Goldenberg ; Iwasiw, 2015).
This practice should be incorporated in the training process and in the working environment to enable nurses to fully integrate this important aspect into their daily activities. Education on patient safety will promote shared knowledge and responsibilities, which will influence the organizational culture, which will positively impact the healthcare outcomes (Gallo ; Smith, 2015). The patient safety curriculum should be developed to provide strategies to prevent and address patient safety issues. The educational strategies should also be focused on bringing changes in the organization as a team as healthcare goals are a result of teamwork (Gallo ; Smith, 2015). Other factors, which influence the safety of patients, should also be included in the curriculum and how they can be addressed. Adequate information and support should also be provided which will help nurses in implementing patient safety strategies and will increase their competency (Gallo ; Smith, 2015).
Since learning is theoretical, support and guidelines should be provided in practice to ensure proper application of the knowledge acquired in school. Simulations can be integrated in the education curriculum to improve the efficiency of the training program (Gallo ; Smith, 2015). The environment should also be favorable to enable students to learn and practice their acquired knowledge. This can involve provision of the necessary training resources to enable better understanding of the information provided (Gallo ; Smith, 2015). Application of evidence-based strategies can also be incorporated in the nursing practice, which will improve patient safety strategies. Any challenges encountered through the training should be properly addressed. Health education is among the first training process in preparing nurses for their profession and patient safety should be incorporated at this stage as providing care to patients is the major role and responsibility of all healthcare professionals (Gallo ; Smith, 2015).
