Control and power almost always play a significant role in any communication. In a conversation the impact of authority upon communication increases for the better or the worse. In most cases, authority and power impact negatively on the communication process. When individuals or groups of people meet, there is always a process of establishing a power relationship, which can be either conscious or unconscious. That does not mean that this process is bad or wrong because one party, for the most part, dominates communication and expects to have more control and accordingly the other side may accept the dominance. It is however also possible that the other company may be angered and disappointed by the other who seized power and may respond in actions which are not conducive for meaningful communication (boycott, attacking, etc.) It is especially necessary that the dominant party (culture group), whether really dominant or only perceived as authoritative, will take concrete and deliberate steps to enhance a more balanced experience of power in the interaction of the parties involved.
A few examples of power which usually influences the communication between individuals or groups are the status and position of the participants included in the community; the attitude of the majority of people concerning the group towards which the different participants belong (gender, youth, tribe, class, sexual orientation, etc.); the ability to speak a particular language or the ability to formulate and express oneself easily, logically and emotionally. Control and power almost always play a significant role in any communication. However, in most cases, authority and power impact negatively on the communication process.
